General Questions

Harvest Moon water-free toilets separate urine and solids without using water. Solids are collected in a container with a peat-free carbon cover, while urine is drained away. This separation keeps the system hygienic, efficient, and odor-free.

A built-in urine diverter separates liquids from solids automatically during use. This minimizes odor and simplifies waste handling.

Yes. They are designed to work without water, sewer connections, or extensive plumbing, making them ideal for off-grid and low-infrastructure locations.

Installation & Use

Harvest Moon water-free toilets separate urine and solids without using water. Solids are collected in a container with a peat-free carbon cover, while urine is drained away. This separation keeps the system hygienic, efficient, and odor-free.

Installation typically includes positioning the unit, routing ventilation, and connecting urine drainage according to local regulations.

No. Using Luna feels very similar to a conventional toilet and requires no special behavior.

Maintenance & Emptying

Emptying frequency depends on usage. Correct use of the carbon cover helps extend emptying intervals. Our recomendation is to empty every other week.

The solids container is removed and emptied into an approved composting or waste-handling solution. Urine drains automatically and does not need manual emptying.

No. Separation and carbon cover keep the process clean and manageable.

Toilet Paper & Additives

Yes. Compostable toilet paper can be used. For best performance, paper can also be disposed of separately. Do not use wet wipes.

No harsh chemicals are needed. Harvest Moon uses peat-free carbon cover and a biologically based After Flush liquid for hygiene and odor control.

Composting

Yes. A closed, approved composting solution for human waste is recommended. Se our resource page for recomended composting solutions.

Always check with your local municipality for applicable rules. The guidelines provided here follow standard practices in Sweden.

Use two separate containers (≈ 65 L each) for feces mixed with carbon cover (sawdust and biochar). Each container holds one year’s batch. Urine should be collected separately.

Total composting time is approximately 24 months.

When the container is about half full, add approximately an equal amount of soil to the waste. The soil introduces beneficial microorganisms that help start the decomposition process. Close the lid loosely to allow aeration while protecting the contents from rain.

If you want to follow our best in practice: Year 1 use bokashi/lactofermentation, with an air tight lid, Year 2 use vermicomposting with worms, add soil and red wigglers. Close the lid loosely to allow aeration while protecting the contents from rain.

An additional maturation year (≈12 months) can be added for extra safety.)

After proper composting and according to regulations, the material can be safely returned to soil or handled as required locally.

Taking Care Of Urine

Store urine in a sealed container. What this is depends on your house and how you want to dispose of it.

Yes, properly stored urine can be diluted with water and used as fertilizer.

Store urine in a ventilated, shaded area. High temperatures may increase ammonia loss, so make sure the container is sealed.

Keep urine separate from the feces compost, in dedicated storage containers.

Legal & Practical Questions

In homes, cabins, public spaces, and off-grid environments. Always check local regulations.

This depends on local authorities and the type of installation.
