General Questions
Harvest Moon toilets separate urine and solids without using water. Solids are collected in a bucket with a peat-free carbon cover, while urine is drained away together with a biological after-flush. This separation keeps the system hygienic, efficient, and odor-free.
A built-in urine diverter separates liquids from solids automatically during use. This minimizes odor, preserves nutrients and simplifies waste handling.
Installation & Use
Yes. They are designed to work without water, sewer connections, or extensive plumbing, making them ideal for off-grid and low-infrastructure locations.
Yes, Luna 0 runs on 24V, so you can choose whether to connect it using the included power adapter in a 230V wall outlet, or whether you want to run it with solar panels and a battery pack.
Installation typically includes positioning the unit, routing ventilation, and connecting urine drainage according to local regulations.
Maintenance & Emptying
Emptying frequency depends on usage. Correct use of the carbon cover helps extend emptying intervals. Our recomendation is to empty every other week.
The solids container is removed and emptied into an approved composting or waste-handling solution. Urine drains automatically and does not need manual emptying.
How to empty the solids bucket
Follow these four steps to empty and reset the solids container.
01 — Prepare the bag:
Remove the frame that holds the bag in place, then fold the bag's edges down into the bucket.
02 — Secure and lift out the bucket
Place the included lid firmly on the bucket, then lift it straight out of the toilet.
03 — Empty into compost
Carry the bucket to your latrine compost, outhouse, or other approved waste-handling solution and empty it there.
04 — Clean and reset
Rinse and clean the bucket if needed. Make sure it is completely dry before inserting a new bag and clamping it in place with the frame.
Important: The bag is compostable, but it is not designed to carry waste. Always transport the solids inside the bucket with the lid on — never lift or carry the bag itself.
The process is designed to be clean and manageable throughout. Urine and solids are separated at the source, and a carbon cover keeps things dry and fresh. The liner and rim design means you never have to handle soiled surfaces. Luna includes a lid for the bucket, which keeps the contents and any odour contained on the way to the compost. Once empty, the smooth interior surfaces make the bucket quick and easy to clean.
Toilet Paper & Additives
Toilet paper can go in the solids bucket, but we recommend using a separate paper bin instead. This keeps the bucket tidy and reduces how often it needs to be emptied. Harvest Moon offers a clever solution for this purpose, our Stomp. A hand thrown ceramic bin that reduces the volume of used paper.
No harsh chemicals are needed. Harvest Moon uses a peat-free carbon cover and a biologically based After Flush liquid. Our unique formula uses natural ingredients that not only control odour and prevent build-up in the system — it also preserves the nutrients in the waste, so they can do good when returned to the soil.
Composting & Waste Handling
Yes. We recommend a closed, approved composting solution for human waste. Your local municipality guideline may vary so check what is needed where you live.
Total composting time is approximately 24 months and divided in 2 cycles. First 12 months you fill the composting container then the second year you leave the compost for maturation. The easiest way to achieve this is to alternate between two composts. This is what most local regulations requires for safe composting, but local regulations can differ so check what is required where you live.
An additional maturation year (≈12 months) can be added for extra safety.)
Congratulations — you have created rich, nutritious soil. The circle is complete. Your finished compost is wonderful for the garden, though keep in mind that it is highly nutrient-dense, so it is best mixed with older soil before use. As always, make sure composting has been carried out properly and in accordance with local regulations before returning the material to the ground.
Taking Care Of Urine
Luna offers several options for managing urine. Choose the one that works best for your situation and always check which regulations apply in your municipality.
- Direct it to a collection container for use in garden watering.
- Let it drain into an infiltration bed in the ground.
- Collect it in a vessel for periodic collection service.
- Connect it to an existing drain.
Note: The hose must never extend down into a collection vessel. It should always terminate at the coupling on the outside of the tank to prevent backflow.
Urine is actually a fantastic source of nutrients for your plants. Dilute it with water and it makes an excellent natural fertilizer. A simple collection vessel is all you need to get started.
Store urine in a sealed container. The right solution depends on your setup and how you plan to dispose of it.
Store urine in a ventilated, shaded area. High temperatures may increase ammonia loss, so make sure the container is closed.

Always check with your local municipality for applicable rules. The guidelines provided here follow standard practices in Sweden.
Use two separate containers (≈ 65 L each) for feces mixed with carbon cover (sawdust and biochar). Each container holds one year’s batch. Urine should be collected separately.
